Tests and simulations with clean, hot smoke machine

Applus+ TST has a machine which can generate hot, clean smoke in order to carry out ventilation tests inside tunnels which are under construction and/or in operation.

The smoke machine, due to its design, only needs an electrical source of 230V with a consumption of 6000 W, a pressure tank of carbon dioxide (CO2) and oil in order to generate smoke.

The maximum output of smoke is between 500 m3/min and 380 m3/min.

Smoke is released at a temperature of 70o C, high enough to cause stratification and test the smoke detection systems in the tunnel.

Drills and tests carried out

  • Ventilation test in the Olandixo Tunnel (Mondragón), for the Arrasate Western Bypass Temporary Consortium (UTE).
  • Fire drill in the Gardunha Tunnel (Portugal) for the management company SCUTVIAS, where firefighters, Civil Protection and the health services were involved, in addition to the tunnel’s management company.
  • Fire drill in the La Rovira Tunnel (Barcelona) for the Barcelona City Council, where the Barcelona Fire Brigade, Civil Protection and health services were involved, in addition to the tunnel’s management company.
  • Fire drill in the Vallvidrera Tunnel (Barcelona) for Tunnels of Barcelona and Cadí (ABERTIS Group), involving the Fire Brigade of Barcelona, the Fire Brigade of the Government of Catalonia, traffic officers and the Catalan Police Service, Civil Protection and the health services, as well as the tunnel’s management company.
